MERINOWOL

MERINOWOL

Is an exceptionally high-quality, natural fibre derived from the Merino sheep, a breed known for its extremely fine, soft and comfortable wool.

Originally from Spain, now mainly from Australia, New Zealand and Patagonia.

At WALK IT OFF, we always use a high percentage of premium merino wool . Why? Because no other material offers the same combination of comfort, technology, and durability.

Cotton, polyester, nylon… each material has its own properties.

But when it comes to what really matters for your feet — softness, breathability, durability and odor control — merino wool stands head and shoulders above the rest.

MERINO VS REGULAR

🪶 MUCH THINNER 🧵 MUCH SOFTER 🚫 NO ITCHING

Regular wool is known for its stiffness and slight prickliness, simply because its fibers are coarser. Merino wool is the complete opposite. The fiber is exceptionally fine, making it flexible and soft against the skin.

You'll notice the difference immediately when you put it on: merino feels light, smooth, and naturally comfortable, without that typical "wool itch" you often experience with regular wool. It's wool as it was meant to be:

refined, soft and suitable for all day wear.

Dimensionally stable and easy to maintain

What makes merino wool extra special is the natural "spring" in the fiber. This fine curl ensures that a sock always returns to its original shape, even after many washes.

Where cotton can become softer more quickly and synthetic fabrics often lose their suppleness, merino remains pleasantly stable and resilient.

Our WALK IT OFF socks also receive a special treatment to preserve that natural softness as much as possible.

💡 Best care:

Low spin speed, wool program, lukewarm water, wool detergent and leave to dry flat.

Our WALK IT OFF Laundry Bag protects the delicate fibers during washing, so your socks stay beautiful and retain their optimal fit.

ANTI-ODOR & ALWAYS FRESH

Merino wool stays fresh for a remarkably long time because the fibers naturally inhibit bacteria before they develop odors. While cotton and synthetics quickly become musty, merino feels clean and comfortable, even after a long day.

The fibres quickly absorb moisture , wick it away and dry quickly, so you don't feel clammy or stuffy.

At the end of the day, merino wool often smells as fresh as the day you put it on: no odor, no clammy feet. Just a dry, comfortable feeling , no matter how busy your day is.

Temperature-regulating, all year round

Merino wool naturally responds to what your body needs.

When it gets colder, the fine fibers trap tiny air pockets that create a warm, comfortable insulating layer. On warm days, it works the other way around: merino absorbs moisture rapidly and lets it evaporate immediately, naturally cooling you down.

What's remarkable is how much moisture merino wool can absorb: up to 30% of its own weight , without feeling wet, heavy, or sticky. By comparison, cotton feels damp even when it absorbs just a fraction of that amount.

That's why your feet stay in balance all day long. Warm when needed, cool and dry when necessary. No temperature spikes, no clammy socks, just a constant, comfortable body temperature.

🌍 SUSTAINABLE AND NATURAL

Grote berg textielafval die laat zien waarom duurzaamheid van sokken en kleding belangrijk is.
Merino wool is a natural and renewable material, ideal at a time when we need to reduce textile waste and overproduction. Every year, a new fleece grows on the Merino sheep, without the use of artificial fibers or harsh chemicals.

Unlike synthetic fabrics, merino wool doesn't release microplastics into water or the environment. The fibers are completely biodegradable and return to the Earth naturally.

Maintenance is also easier. Thanks to its self-cleaning and odor-resistant properties, you'll need to wash merino wool much less often. This means less water, less energy, and less detergent—and therefore a lower impact.

In addition, merino wool often lasts longer than cotton or synthetic materials. Cotton cultivation requires a lot of water, land, and pesticides, while merino wool simply grows on the backs of sheep and lasts for years if treated properly. Less frequent replacement automatically means less waste.

This way you make a choice that is good for your feet and for the world around you.
